With the global pandemic bringing leisure travel to a virtual standstill since early 2020 the Lonely Planet was forced into completely reimagining” its best in travel picks for 2021 and it said it has tried to reflect how the world and attitudes to travel have changed.

For 2021, Lonely Planet has decided to recognize the places and people demonstrating a genuine commitment to community, diversity and sustainability across the world. The global travel company, Lonely Planet, unveiled the accolade in its prestigious Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2021, naming the Burren Ecotourism Network as one of ten winners in its new ‘Best in Community’ category.

Lonely Planet described Burren Ecotourism Network as “an impressive community collaboration of local enterprises which has transformed Ireland’s Burren and Cliffs of Moher Geopark into a global leader for sustainable tourism”.

    The Burren Ecotourism Network

The Burren Ecotourism Network sees more than 60 local businesses coming together to promote sustainable tourism at the Burren and Cliffs of Moher Geopark. The initiative promotes slow tourism, local engagement and sustainability – with each business signing up to a ‘Code of Sustainable Practice’ that encourages reductions in waste output, water consumption and energy usage.
